Wood fires - Frequently asked questions

We regularly receive questions about our wood-burning fireplaces. We would like to help you with the most common topics.

Built-in wood fire - Kalfire's closed wood fires

One of the most important factors for a responsible wood fire is that you have a closed wood fire and not an open fire. These produce virtually no particulate matter and smell and emit transparent smoke, unlike a fireplace. Moreover, closed fireplaces ensure optimal heat distribution and clean combustion. Especially when your fireplace meets the strictest European environmental requirements.

Our closed wood fires comply with all European environmental regulations, including the CE standard, the strict Austrian 15A standard, the German BlmSchV stufe 2 and the latest Belgian laws. If you choose Kalfire, you not only choose ease of use, comfort and design, but also the environment.

Kalfire wood-burning fireplaces are among the most environmentally friendly in the world. The perfect sealing and innovative techniques we incorporate in our wood-burning fireplaces ensure optimum combustion. A Kalfire wood fire therefore guarantees high efficiency and minimal carbon monoxide and dust emissions. So you need less wood and put less strain on the environment.

Buying and installing a wood fireplace

Selecting and fitting a suitable wood fire requires preparation and planning. Where is the flue going to be? How does an enclosed wood fire fit into your home? Will you use the fireplace as additional heating, or as main heating? And what model/type of wood fire do you want? How do you personalise your fireplace? Just some of the questions you need to answer together with a dealer to realise your dream fireplace and design.

Wood-burning fire 3-sided or another model?

Our 3-sided wood fires, the W66/48S and W90/47S, let you enjoy the fire view from all sides because the glass is on the front and both sides. Our 3-sided wood fires, Roomdivider wood fire (W53/50R) and corner wood fire (W90/47C) are the only wood fireplaces in the world that boast a curved ceramic glass panel surrounding the fireplace on three sides. The seamless, clear glass creates a warm and welcoming ambience that is a visual treat from every angle. Furthermore, we offer a see-through wood burner (Tunnel model) and various front wood burners. Which model do you prefer?

How to light a wood fireplace?

The Swiss method is by far the most sustainable way to light a fireplace and is also called reverse firing. This involves starting the fire from above. With this method, the fire and flue quietly come up to temperature. This avoids unnecessary burning of wood and keeps the nuisance caused by wood smoke to a minimum. When this method is carried out properly, the fire is completely smoke-free within minutes.

For firing, it is important to use dry wood. Dry wood has a moisture content of about 15% and ensures a good combustion process; damp wood in fact contaminates the ceramic window and increases the risk of a chimney fire. Moist wood also lowers the temperature in the fireplace and consumes unnecessary energy, as the moisture has to evaporate from the wood first. Do you want to create an optimal play of flames? Then it is best to combine different types of wood. Make sure you use good quality wood. Waste wood that has paint on it, for instance, shortens the lifespan of a fireplace.

    Wood fire vs gas fire

The eternal rivalry between wood fires and gas fires has long divided fire-loving homeowners. Each of these fireplace types has its own unique charm and advantages, making the choice between the two often a matter of personal preference. Fireplaces are the classics among fire types. They offer a heat source that is pure and authentic, with crackling wood fire and the wonderful smell of burnt wood. For many, stoking a wood fire is a ritual that evokes cosiness and connection with nature. Wood fires can be a focal point in the home, creating a warm and rustic atmosphere. However, they are more labour-intensive than other fireplace types, as they require regular maintenance and fuel replenishment. They also require sufficient space for wood storage.

Gas fires, on the other hand, offer the convenience of a fireplace without the hassle of wood preparation and ash clearing. A simple press of a button instantly ignites a warm fire, and the flames can often be controlled by remote control or a thermostat. They are ideal for people with busy lifestyles who still want to enjoy the ambience of a fireplace.

    Wood fireplace vs electric fireplace

Wood fires offer an authentic and traditional fire experience. They exude warmth and a rustic charm, creating a real focal point in any room. The smell of burning wood and the crackling sound of the fire add to the overall experience. However, maintaining a wood fire can be time-consuming, and it requires a persistent supply of firewood.

Electric fireplaces, on the other hand, are a modern and practical choice. They offer the visual aspect of a fire, often with realistic flames and logs, without any actual fire or smoke involved. Electric fireplaces are easy to install and require no maintenance. They are also very energy-efficient and can be used for both heating and ambience. Moreover, they are often versatile in their design and can be bought in different styles and sizes to match any interior.

The choice between a wood burning fireplace, gas fireplace and electric fireplace depends on personal preference, lifestyle and budget. While some swear by the romance of a real wood fire, others prefer the convenience and efficiency of a gas or electric fireplace. Whichever option you choose, a fireplace in your home undoubtedly adds a warm and inviting atmosphere to any room.
